Which Brush Do You Need?

Watercolour
A round brush is your most versatile tool for watercolour – it holds water well, comes to a fine point, and gives you control over both broad washes and fine detail. Start with a medium round (size 8 or 10) and build from there.

Acrylic
Flat and filbert brushes handle coverage and blending well for acrylic work. A flat brush gives you clean edges and broad strokes; a filbert’s rounded tip is ideal for blending and softer marks.

Oil
Oil painting rewards a range of brush shapes. A flat or hog bristle brush handles the initial layers well, while a softer round or filbert is useful for detail and blending in later stages.

Not sure which brush to choose? Ask your instructor at your next class – they use these brushes every session and can give you a specific recommendation based on your medium and current level.

Why a Quality Brush Matters

Student-grade brushes are often the hidden reason a beginner’s work doesn’t look the way they want it to. Cheap bristles splay, lose their shape, and make it harder to control the paint – which makes the learning process more frustrating than it needs to be. A quality brush holds its shape, responds predictably, and lasts significantly longer. It’s one of the best investments you can make in your practice, and the difference is immediately noticeable.
