Michael Grills

Michael Grills is a Calgary-based artist, illustrator, and creative director with over 25 years of professional experience in the visual arts and entertainment industry.
After graduating from the Alberta College of Art and Design, Michael began his career at BioWare Corp., where he worked on internationally recognized AAA role-playing video games. Since then, he has created artwork, illustrations, and visual designs for agencies, publishers, filmmakers, magazines, and game studios around the world.
Throughout his career, Michael has contributed to numerous public art projects, murals, illustrations, and interactive media productions, while also serving in leadership roles as both Creative Director and Art Director.
His personal art practice focuses on figurative and portrait work, often exploring surrealistic themes and the beauty found in everyday moments. Through thoughtful composition, expressive brushwork, and strong storytelling, his work invites viewers to pause and connect with the human experience.

At IN ART Studio, Michael teaches acrylic painting with a focus on portraiture, helping students develop a deeper understanding of color, light, form, and expression. His classes combine professional techniques with a supportive and engaging learning environment, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced artists looking to strengthen their skills.
